FROM THE SACK TO THE MILLSTONES

Here we see the miller pulling on the rope that operates the sackhoist.
This action tightens the belt that rotates a shaft.
The sackhoist chain is wrapped around the shaft, lifting the sack. |

These two grain bins must be filled equally to maintain the mill's balance.
The storage capacity of each bin is ½ ton of grain.

The grain flows out of the bin, down a chute and into the hopper placed above the centre (the eye) of the millstone.
The box surrounding the millstones is known as a Tun.
