FROM THE SACK TO THE MILLSTONES

Sackhoist rope and roller Here we see the miller pulling on the rope that operates the sackhoist.

This action tightens the belt that rotates a shaft.

The sackhoist chain is wrapped around the shaft, lifting the sack.

Grain Bins These two grain bins must be filled equally to maintain the mill's balance.

The storage capacity of each bin is ½ ton of grain.

Tail Stones The grain flows out of the bin, down a chute and into the hopper placed above the centre (the eye) of the millstone.

The box surrounding the millstones is known as a Tun.
