In the Census Returns of 1881, 1891 and 1901 RICHARD WOOLER is resident in Windmill Cottages with ABIGAIL his wife. RICHARD and ABIGAIL are buried in the churchyard, he dying on May 2nd 1937 and she on January 24th 1928.
With them is buried one of their children, HENRY GEORGE, who was one year old in the Census of 1891. He died on April 22nd 1905. RICHARD served the Mills all those years and his children are recorded as being born at Clayton Mills.
In the 1881 Census we find RICHARD SIMMONS living in Mill Lane Cottages, a Miller, and his wife LOUISA. RICHARD was 31 years old and was born in Clayton. LOUISA was born in Hurst, but their children WILLIAM and GEORGE were born in Lewisham. WILLIAM was six and GEORGE was four.
RICHARD SIMMONS, it might be assumed, came to Clayton in the previous three or four years to take up the post of Miller.
